Memory Tips

Memorizing States & Capitals is Fun!

I just received the nicest comment about “Let’s Memorize States & Capitals” cards. This is why I love what I do. (Making memorizing fun.) I spent a lot of time thinking about how I could associate the state name with the capital name. I tried different stories and pictures and if I couldn’t remember them after a few weeks, out they’d go until I found the perfect match. I also love it when parents participate in the learning fun with their kids!

The state Capitals are simply amazing. I have a 6 year old son who started learning them a month ago and he already knows most of the Capitals. We work on two at a time and he actually loves them. I am learning them along with him. Before this system I could never remember them.  Sylvia

Learning Liquid Measurement

Gallon, Quart, Pint, Cup Measuring ReminderDo your kids struggle with remembering how many cups, pints and quarts there are in a gallon?

Here’s a memory tip for learning liquid measurement. As students draw the large G tell them this story: In the kingdom of Gallon there were 4 Queens (Q is for quarts. 4 quarts in a gallon), each queen had a Prince & Princess (P is for pints. 2 pints in a quart). Each Prince & Princess had 2 Cats (C is for Cups, 2 cups in a pint.)

This is an easy way for visual students to remember liquid measurement. Making associations and seeing this visual concept, puts the information into children’s long-term memory!

Learning how to memorize math terms with pictures, stories and rhymes, makes life much easier! Check out my site for “know how” solutions. Look through my Memory Tips for Math book to see if this is something that would help your child gain a little “know how.”

Vocabulary Memory Tip

Ms. Gant's Elegant Elephant Pants!Learning the meanings of new vocabulary words often stress kids out!  Make it easy on them.  Try making an association or rhyme and drawing a little picture to illustrate the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary words. Kinesthetic learners need to act out the words in order to remember.  Not sure which learning style they are?  Take a look here.

Vocabulary word: elegant

There once was an elephant named Ms. Gant

Who liked to wear elegant pants

She was graceful and refined

Looking glamorous when she dined

And everyone knew her as Ele Gant.

Visual learners need to draw a picture of an elegant elephant. Audio learners will want to repeat the rhyme over and over. Kinesthetic learners act out the word in their most elegant manner. I guarantee, students will never forget the meaning of this word.
