Addition/Subtraction

Check out my Add/Subtract Rhyme Book on MagicBlox

If you haven’t visited MagicBlox with your children, you are missing out! It’s an online children’s book library. Children can pick a book with bright colorful illustrations and clever new stories and read to their heart’s content!  I was very impressed with the site and the service it’s providing to children and new authors. I’m adding some of my new books too. Check out my Add/Subtract Rhymes Book

Now you can add more books to your child’s library without leaving your home! All you need is access to the web.  The other plus, is the video and sound in some of the books. I also found that the library is constantly growing in size. I like the concept and you can try it out for free. Check it out.

The Money Rap

Teaching is so much easier if  you get kids singing and moving.  My students always loved this little Money Rap. It’s just the ticket for teaching coin denomination. Use a rap cadence and have fun with it.  Follow up by using actual coins while singing the rap.

The Money Rap
Well, I know a song, it’s really kind of funny,
It’s all about coins and learning to count money.

Chorus: Pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters
Pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters

Now a penny means one (hold out 1 finger)
And a nickel means five (hold out 5 fingers)
Dimes are worth ten (hold out 10 fingers
Quarters twenty five (flash 10 twice and then 5)
Repeat chorus

Five pennies in a nickel (1 hand fingers stretched)
Two nickels in a dime (hold out 2 fingers)
Five nickels in a quarter (1 hand fingers stretched)
You’ll know it every time.(downward motion both hands)
Repeat chorus

Five pennies make a nickel, Two nickels make a dime
Two dimes and a nickel, make a quarter every time.
Repeat chorus

Four quarters make a dollar and that is quite a lot,
And a dollar in my pocket is exactly what I’ve got.
Repeat chorus

Shortcut Subtraction – Memory Tip of the Month

Do you or your kids have problems subtracting with a lot of zeros?  All you do is take one away from both the top and bottom numbers (subtrahend and the minuend).  Look at these examples and you’ll get the idea!

Isn’t that easier than regrouping the numbers across all the zeros?  It’s good practice for children to count backwards too.  Of course children need to learn regrouping but this is what I’d call a subtraction shortcut.

I’ve been sharing this fast method while speaking at teacher conferences, and I’ve been amazed at how many teachers don’t know about it.   Why do something the hard way when there is a simpler method?
